National D-Day Memorial

Bedford, Virginia USA

Why, you might ask, is the National D-Day Memorial in the small southern Virginia city of Bedford?  Because Bedford, on June 6, 1944, suffered the highest casualties per capita  of any city in America.  That, and the good citizens of Bedford decided that a memorial was needed and they put together the enormous effort needed to create a project such as this.

Our first visit to the memorial was just after it was dedicated and we returned in 2006 to see what progress has been made toward completion of the project.  A beautiful visitor center has been added at the foot of the hill upon which the Memorial is located.  Among other items of Bedford city pride is this restored fire apparatus that served the city for many decades.
