Logan Actuator

You have probably wondered just what Logan Actuator has to do with Logan Lathes.  Well,  Scott's grand- dad   started the company early in the 1900's to manufacture Actuators (pictured below).  The lathes came later in the game.

An actuator, or (as Scott tells me) more properly a "Mine Hoist Safety Controller,  is a safety device to do with mine elevators.  If the elevator starts to over speed the Controller senses the danger and cuts power and puts on the brakes to prevent the miners riding the lift from being squashed like bugs at the bottom of the shaft.

Grand-dad Logan purchased the idea from another fellow, made several essential improvements and Logan Actuator has been making them ever since.  The unit pictured has a casting made of aluminum to make it lighter for taking to trade shows and for toting it around as a sales sample.  Actual units are made of cast iron.
